Drug Information Isosorbide Mononitrate

Medication Information: Isosorbide mononitrate is used to prevent the development of angina pectoris. Angina pectoris develops as a result of a decrease in blood flow and oxygen supply to a part of the heart muscle. The disease is caused by coronary artery stenosis due to the production of atrophic fatty substances. This narrowing of the arteries impedes blood flow to the heart muscle.

Isosorbide mononitrate works in two ways. First, it dilates the body's blood vessels, thereby reducing pressure on the heart and making it easier for blood to be pumped around the body. Dilation of blood vessels also increases blood flow to the heart muscle.

Isosorbide mononitrate is sometimes prescribed with other medicines for people with heart failure. Heart failure is a disease in which the heartbeat is irregular and slow and the heart does not work effectively.

Contraindications to the use of isosorbide mononitrate

  • Pay attention to the expiration date of the medicine and do not take it if the medicine in your hand has expired.
  • Never give the medicine to anyone else, even if you have the same symptoms.
  • Do not take more than the dose prescribed by your doctor.
  • Check for drug interactions and be sure to tell your doctor what other medications you are taking.

Drug Interaction Isosorbide Mononitrate

Drug interactions may alter drug performance and increase the risk of serious side effects. Make a list of all the medicines (including prescription / over-the-counter and herbal medicines) you use and share them with your doctor and pharmacist. Do not change the dose of your medicine without consulting your doctor or stop taking the medicine.

Some medications that may interact with isosorbide mononitrate include: Erectile Dysfunction and Pulmonary Hypertension (such as sildenafil, tadalafil), and riociguat.

Check the labels on all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, as many medications (cough and cold medications, dietary supplements, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or naproxen) contain ingredients that may cause heart failure. It gets worse or your heart rate goes up. Talk to your doctor about taking these medications.

Isosorbide mononitrate is very similar to isosorbide dinitrate. Do not use isosorbide-containing medicines with isosorbide mononitrate.

Isosorbide mononitrate may interfere with certain laboratory tests (including cholesterol levels) and cause erroneous results. Before taking the test, ask the lab staff about taking the medicine.
